How to Buy Fabric Online Without Surprises: A Simple Checklist

How to Buy Fabric Online Without Surprises: A Simple Checklist

Buying fabric online saves time and gives you far more choice than a local market, but you cannot touch the cloth before you pay. Most bad experiences come from a few avoidable surprises: a fabric that is thinner than expected, a colour that looks different, or simply ordering too little. This checklist helps you read a listing like a pro, ask the right questions and buy with confidence.

1. Check the composition

“Cotton feel” is not the same as cotton. Look for the exact fibre content, such as 100% cotton, cotton-polyester, viscose or silk blend. If it is not listed, ask. See how to tell real cotton and what magic cotton means.

2. Check the width and length

Fabric is usually 44 inches (112 cm) or 58 inches (147 cm) wide. A wider fabric needs fewer metres. Also check whether you are buying a fixed piece (for example 2.5 m) or by the metre, and whether the length includes any border or panel.

3. Understand GSM (fabric weight)

GSM means grams per square metre: the higher the number, the heavier and usually thicker the fabric.

GSM Weight Typical use
Below 100 Very light Chiffon, voile, mulmul, dupattas
100 to 150 Light to medium Kurtis, shirts, summer wear
150 to 250 Medium to heavy Suits, dresses, brocade
Above 250 Heavy Jackets, upholstery, winter wear

If GSM is not listed, words like “sheer”, “lightweight” or “heavy” and a photo of the fabric against light will tell you a lot.

4. Look closely at the photos

  • Good listings show the full drape, a close-up of the weave or work, and ideally the fabric against light.
  • Photos in natural daylight are more accurate than heavily edited studio shots.
  • Colours can vary slightly between screens. If colour matching is critical, ask the seller for a video in daylight.

5. Work out the right quantity

Use our metre guide and add a little extra for shrinkage, print matching and plus sizes. If you are matching fabrics for a set, order them together so they come from the same batch.

6. Check delivery, returns and payment

  • Read the shipping policy for dispatch and delivery times, especially before a function.
  • Read the return policy. Cut-to-length fabric is usually non-returnable, but damaged or wrong items should be covered.
  • Pay through a trusted gateway (like Razorpay) with UPI, cards or net banking.

7. Check the seller

  • A real business address, phone number and GST number.
  • Responsive support on WhatsApp or phone.
  • Clear policies and genuine customer reviews.

Red flags to watch for

  • No composition or width mentioned anywhere.
  • Only stock photos or images copied from other websites.
  • Prices far below the market for “pure silk” or “pure cotton”.
  • No contact details or GST number.
  • No clear return or damage policy.

Questions to ask before you buy

  1. What is the exact composition and width?
  2. Is it pre-shrunk? Will dark colours bleed?
  3. Is it see-through? Will it need a lining?
  4. Can you send a daylight video or a close-up of the weave?
  5. When will it be dispatched, and how long will delivery take to my pincode?

After your fabric arrives

  • Record a short unboxing video. It makes any damage claim quick and simple.
  • Check the length and the fabric in daylight within the return window.
  • Pre-wash cotton and rayon before stitching, following the care instructions. See our fabric care guide.

Buying fabric for an event: a simple timeline

When What to do
5 to 6 weeks before Choose and order fabric, lining and dupatta together
4 to 5 weeks before Check delivery, pre-wash and hand over to your tailor
2 weeks before First fitting and adjustments
1 week before Final fitting, pressing and accessories

During wedding season, tailors get very busy, so add an extra week or two to this plan.

Making sense of colour online

Phones and laptops display colours differently, and indoor lighting changes how fabric looks. Maroon can look red, navy can look black and pastels can look washed out. Compare the main photo with the close-up, read the colour name in the description, and if matching is important, ask for a daylight video or a photo next to a common object for reference.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to buy fabric online?

Yes, if the seller has clear policies, real contact details and a secure payment gateway.

Can I return fabric that has been cut?

Usually not, unless it arrived damaged, defective or different from what you ordered.

Should I order a small quantity first?

If you are trying a new seller or fabric type, ordering one piece first is a sensible way to check quality before buying for a whole set or a family function.

Why does the fabric smell new or chemical when it arrives?

Finishing agents and dyes can leave a light smell. Airing the fabric and a gentle pre-wash usually removes it completely.

What if the colour is slightly different from the photo?

Small shade differences caused by screens and lighting are normal. A clearly different colour from the one described should be reported to the seller with photos, within their return window.
