Rayon vs Cotton Fabric for Kurtis: Which One Should You Choose?
Rayon and cotton are the two most popular fabrics for kurtis in India, and for good reason: both are breathable, comfortable and available in endless prints. But they behave quite differently once stitched and worn. Here is a simple comparison to help you choose.
What is cotton?
Cotton is a natural fibre from the cotton plant. It is breathable, absorbs sweat well, is gentle on skin and becomes softer with every wash. Cotton has a crisper body, so kurtis hold a neat, structured shape. Printed cottons, including block prints and foil prints, are wardrobe staples for Indian summers.

What is rayon?
Rayon (often sold as viscose) is a semi-synthetic fibre made from regenerated cellulose, usually from wood pulp. It is soft, smooth and cool to touch, and it drapes and flows beautifully. Rayon takes dye very well, so colours look vivid, and it is a lovely base for sequin, mirror and tie-dye work.

| Drape | Holds its shape, structured | Flowy, falls close to the body |
| Breathability | Excellent, absorbs sweat | Very good, feels cool |
| Colour | Good, earthy prints look great | Rich, vibrant colours |
| Durability | Very durable, gets softer with washing | Weaker when wet, needs gentle care |
| Shrinkage | Can shrink 3 to 5 percent, pre-wash | Can shrink, wash cold and gently |
| Wrinkles | Creases easily, irons well | Creases less on the body, iron on low heat |

Washing tips for both
- Wash dark and bright colours separately for the first few washes.
- Use cold water and a mild detergent; avoid bleach.
- Do not wring rayon. Press out water gently and dry it flat or on a hanger in the shade.
- Iron cotton on medium heat and rayon on low heat, ideally from the reverse side.
The verdict
There is no single winner. Cotton is the everyday workhorse; rayon is the comfortable dress-up option. Most wardrobes need both. If you are stitching your first kurti, start with one of each and see which you reach for more often.
