Wedding Season Fabric Guide: Choosing Fabric for Haldi, Mehndi, Sangeet and the Big Day
An Indian wedding is not one event but many, and each function has its own mood, colours and dress code. Getting your own outfits stitched lets you choose exactly the fabric, colour and fit you want, often for much less than ready-made. Here is a function-by-function guide to picking the right fabric.
Haldi: bright, light and washable
Haldi is all about yellow and having fun, and you will probably get turmeric on your clothes. Choose light, comfortable fabrics in yellow, marigold or white that you will not mind washing afterwards.
- Best fabrics: printed cotton, soft rayon, light brocade for a dupatta or jacket.
- Colours: sunshine yellow, mustard, golden yellow, white with yellow prints.

Mehndi: greens and playful detail
Mehndi is relaxed and colourful. Greens are the classic choice, and fabrics with mirror work, tie-dye or sequins add a festive sparkle without feeling heavy.
- Best fabrics: rayon with sequin or mirror work, silk-cotton brocade for a short jacket.
- Colours: mehndi green, parrot green, mint, with pink or orange accents.

Sangeet: shine for the dance floor
Sangeet is the night to shine, literally. Pick fabrics that catch the light but still let you move and dance comfortably for hours.
- Best fabrics: sequin rayon for flowy kurtas and anarkalis, satin brocade for lehengas and jackets.
- Colours: gold, wine, deep pink, jewel tones.

The wedding day: rich brocade and classic reds
For the wedding itself, nothing beats the richness of Banarasi brocade. Brides often choose red or maroon, while family and guests can wear brocade in pinks, oranges, wines and golds.
- Best fabrics: Banarasi brocade for lehenga skirts and blouses, with a contrast dupatta.
- Colours: red, maroon, wine, rani pink, orange.

Reception: elegant jewel tones
Receptions lean towards evening glamour. Deep jewel tones and pastels both work well, with a more polished, minimal look than the wedding day.
- Best fabrics: satin brocade, silk-cotton blend brocade, sequin rayon.
- Colours: navy, royal blue, purple, cream, turquoise.

Planning tips
- Start early: good tailors are booked out during wedding season, so buy fabric 4 to 6 weeks ahead.
- Buy matching lining and extras together: lining, tassels, lace and buttons should match in daylight.
- Check quantities: lehengas need more fabric than you might expect. Use our metre guide.
- Mix one statement piece with plain fabrics: a brocade blouse or jacket with a plain skirt or kurta looks rich and saves money.
- Do a trial fitting at least a week before the first function.
